Serious laughter ...
If you want to know how laughter is being put to work to change
significant, social, personal, and medical problems - take a look at
these reports ...
* Laughter events played a large part in Wales's 2007 National Healthy Living Week.
* Clown doctors at Great
Ormond Street make regular visits to help children to deal with the
distress of waiting for treatment - and POD is a
theatre group that
specialises in brining laughter to children's hospitals around the
country
* Mariana Funes teaches laughter to organisations and has written
an excellent article on the
importance of laughter in the workplace
* According to research
conducted by the Wellcome Trust - the brain can't help but
feel happy when it hears other people laugh. This may help
explain why laughter sessions go so well - you only need to hear
other people having a good time for your brain to start to
produce the right chemicals to make you laugh too.
* Laughter helps your heart according to researchers
at the University of Maryland - it relaxes the blood vessels
and allows blood to flow more easily around the body
* Laughter lowers your tress hormones: for a summary of Dr Lee
Berk's research in this area read this
article in The
Guardian
* Is laughter everytrhing it's cracked up to be ? Two
doctors have sifted through the evidence and conclude that
the evidence for increasing heart rate and relaxing muscles is
better than that for decreasing cortisol. They have some doubts
about the claims that laughter is equivalent to aerobic exercise,
saying that "these changes are in effect only during periods
of intense laughter,
which are very difficult to sustain for any
length of time This makes it unlikely that
laughter
can
be regarded as a realistic substitute for aerobic exercise"
But then they don't seem to know about LAUGHTER YOGA -
any of us running laughter workshops know just how long you can
extend laughter for if you know the right exercises !
